Sabrina's Law Documentary and Fundraiser

Thursday, September 25, 2008

Support Anaphylaxis Canada during Anaphylaxis Awareness Month this September

Anaphylaxis Canada is proud to host an event featuring the film, "Sabrina's Law", a documentary produced by Lank/Beach Productions, Merit Motion Pictures and The National Film Board of Canada. The film, completed in 2007, profiles the story of 13 year old allergy advocate, Sabrina Shannon, who died in September 2003 from an anaphylactic reaction while at school.

The event will take place at the Royal York Hotel (Imperial Room) in Toronto on Thursday, September 25, starting with a cocktail reception at 5:30 pm. Following the screening of the documentary our featured guests - Sara Shannon and Mike Shannon, Sabrina’s parents - will be on hand to talk about a journey which has led from tragedy to hope. Others who were involved in the making of the film will also be available to answer audience questions.

This evening will be dedicated to increasing awareness of anaphylaxis and the significant impact Sabrina’s Law has had both in our local community as well as around the world. Funds raised through this event will help Anaphylaxis Canada to further develop resources for school communities.

Sabrina’s story was instrumental in the passing of groundbreaking legislation known as Sabrina’s Law which requires that measures be in place to safeguard children at risk of anaphylaxis in publicly funded schools in Ontario. Since this law went into effect in January 2006, other jurisdictions in Canada and across North America have followed suit. We now have legislation to protect children at risk in child care centres in Ontario, a ministerial order in British Columbia, and provincial guidelines in Alberta and Newfoundland. While we are proud of these achievements to date, there is so much more work which needs to be done to protect a growing number of children at risk across the country.
