TIPS FOR LIVING WITH ANAPHYLAXIS

Living with anaphylaxis can be a challenge.

Anaphylaxis Canada can help you learn to live safely with your allergy. Start by following these important safety rules:
  1. See a doctor who is a qualified specialist in allergies (an allergist).

  2. Find out what could cause a reaction. Learn how to avoid your allergen.

  3. Keep an epinephrine auto-injector with you at all times (more information below). Even if you are careful to avoid your allergen, accidents can happen.

  4. If you have food-related anaphylaxis, don't eat unless you know exactly what is in the food and have epinephrine with you.

  5. Know how to recognize symptoms. Make sure you know how to use the epinephrine auto-injector correctly. If your child has anaphylaxis, make sure all caregivers and teachers are properly trained.

  6. Wear MedicAlert identification.

    I Enjoy a Great Life
To look at me, I am a perfectly normal kid. I enjoy rock climbing, horseback riding and I play the drums, but I suffer from anaphylaxis.

This is a life-threatening allergic reaction. In my case it is an allergy to nuts, seeds and coconut.

I'd like everybody who reads this to take allergies seriously. Any kid who has trouble coping should just remember that we're all special and that my allergies don't stop me from participating and enjoying life.
    What is Anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis (anna - fill -axis) is a serious allergic reaction. It can be life-threatening. Food is the most common cause of anaphylaxis, but insect stings, medicine, latex, or exercise can also cause a reaction. The commonest food allergens are peanuts, tree nuts, seafood, egg and milk products.
